My lips tend to get very dry and chapped during the colder months of the year so I’m constantly on the lookout for some home DIY remedies or quality lip nourishing products. There are number of causes of chapped and very dry lips such as dehydration, sun exposure, harsh weather, vitamin deficiency or the simple act of excessive licking of lips. Thinking about it, each cause appear to be ever so common that caring a lip balm becomes an absolute necessity. To help narrow the selection process here are my top 5 lip balms and lip treatments that help me maintain soft and smooth lips despite the season.
First step towards smoother lips is exfoliation. Lip scrubs are sometimes hard to come across at the drugstore or even at the luxury cosmetics counters. If you are in a mood for some quick DIY you can mix 2 tsp of custard sugar (brown sugar also works well for more gentle exfoliation) with 1 tsp of pure honey (virgin olive oil is also a great supplement). Apply and massage the tick paste onto your lips are leave on for few minutes before you wipe it off. Results are instantly visible and all the dead, flaky dry skin is gone. In case DIY are not your thing I came across some good and reasonably priced alternatives. Lush Lip Scrubs £5.50 comes in four different flavors and is probably the most easily accessible one. Each flavor is quite strong so my advice is to pick something you really like (most of the time some flavors are sold out due to demand in popularity). The scrub particles are small but chunky that really help get rid of any dry skin. If you are looking for product that scrubs and moisturizes your lips at the same time than Victoria Secret flavored lip scrub £5 is a good option. The scrub bits are tiny and well mixed up with a very moisturizing lip balm. Mine is in Strawberry Fizz flavor with has strong strawberry scent that once on it does not linger. Great 2 in 1 product.
Step two after exfoliation is moisturizing and no product performs better than Nuxe Rève Miel Lip Balm £9.50. I normally use it as a night treatment and apply thick layer before I go to bed. In the morning my lips feel significantly softer and well moisturized. The consistency is tick and balm like, with slight zesty scent. If I have to pick one product to purchase from this bunch I would highly recommend going for Nuxe Lip Balm. For during the day I much prefer carrying a chap stick than a small pot, just because of practical and hygienic reasons.
My current obsession is this new L’Occitane Pivoine Sublime Tinted Lip Balm in Rose Amber £12. Mine has a slight dark red tint to it that adds a dash of color in the lips. The smell is absolutely amazing and addictive since it smells like fresh peonies. The packaging is also great since it comes with a screw in lid and lightweight metal case. This lip balm also comes in transparent shade. For my high end lovers this next product probably comes as no surprise. Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm £24 is definitely more of a luxe treat rather than a treatment. On the lips it feels very nourishing and gives a slight pink tint that enhances my natural lip color. This product develops its color on the lips so final results can vary per person. I must admit that I really like it but this is definitely not a must have product, perhaps only when/if budget allows. In case you are looking for more affordable lip balm alternative and you are not a fan of Vaseline I suggest applying coconut oil. It does the job equally as good, also smells and taste delicious!
